10 Tips to Improve Your HPAT Section 1 Score
Why Section 1 Is the Most Improvable
Section 1 tests logical reasoning and problem solving — skills that respond very well to deliberate practice. Unlike Section 2 (which partly relies on emotional intelligence) or Section 3 (which depends on spatial ability), Section 1 rewards structured thinking that anyone can develop.
Tip 1: Read the Question Before the Data
When you see a chart, table, or passage, resist the urge to study every detail first. Read the question, then go to the data for just the information you need. This saves valuable seconds on every question.
Tip 2: Practise Mental Arithmetic
You won't have a calculator in the HPAT. Brush up on percentages, fractions, and quick estimation. Being comfortable with numbers gives you a speed advantage.
Tip 3: Eliminate Wrong Answers First
If you're stuck, start by crossing off answers that are clearly wrong. Even eliminating one or two options significantly improves your odds if you need to make an educated guess.
Tip 4: Time Yourself from Day One
Many students can solve Section 1 questions given unlimited time. The challenge is doing it under exam conditions. Start practising with a timer from your very first study session.
Tip 5: Learn to Spot Common Question Patterns
Section 1 questions tend to fall into recognisable categories: data interpretation, logical deduction, numerical reasoning, and problem-solving puzzles. Once you recognise the type, you can apply the right strategy faster.
Tip 6: Don't Get Stuck
If a question is taking more than 90 seconds, mark it and move on. You can come back to it at the end. Getting stuck on one difficult question can cost you several easier marks elsewhere.
Tip 7: Check Units and Labels
A common trap in data questions is misreading units (thousands vs. millions) or mixing up axis labels. Take half a second to check before you calculate.
Tip 8: Use Process of Elimination for Complex Problems
For multi-step problems, sometimes it's faster to test the answer options than to solve from scratch. Plug each option back into the problem to see which one fits.
Tip 9: Review Every Mistake
After each practice session, spend as much time reviewing your mistakes as you did answering questions. Understanding why you got something wrong is where real improvement happens.
Tip 10: Build Stamina Gradually
Start with 10-question sets and gradually increase to full 40-question timed sessions. Building up your mental endurance prevents fatigue-related mistakes in the actual exam.
